“Even if you are on the right track you’ll get run over if you just sit there.” – Will Rogers
When I first decided to go into business with John and stop being a wage slave, I was ecstatic. I started reading more and more and building up my knowledge of this new to me trade. Previously, I had spent twenty-two some odd years working in restaurants. Not owning one, just working. I would work 120-hour weeks on a low salary with zero benefits. I was working myself to death with 12+ hour shifts six or seven days a week. I had zero savings. I could barely pay all my bills. The most troubling part is that I had accepted that fate. That was my lot in life and I was going to die a restaurant manager. Then I learned otherwise.
Whatever the reason you decided to start out on your own, you made the decision. But making the decision is actually the easy part. The hardest part is putting what you learn into action. So many people spend too much time looking before they leap and that’s not how a leap of faith works. You have to work for it. Pick up the books and read them. Download the audiobooks and listen when you are on the go. John goes for a walk every morning and he has his headphones on listening to one of our many mentors and coaches on repeat. He’s listening until it is all absorbed.
For me, I’ve had less time in the RE ether and I am still playing catch up. I am putting in the time to learn, but more importantly, I am putting what I learned into action. That is one of the first things I learned. Take what you learn and put it into practice. Don’t let fear keep you from achieving your dreams.
It doesn’t matter what the fear is, you can get past it and move forward. Will you get it right every time? Hell no, but you will learn from every failure and fail forward. Learning from those missteps will make you stronger and better at what you do.
I guess the point of this article is that if you make the decision to be successful, you also have to put in the work. Not just by knowing the ins and outs, but by taking what you learn and applying it in real time. I’ve made a crap ton of mistakes in the years I’ve been doing this, but I try to only make those mistakes once. Does it hurt my pride? Yes, but I get over that and I learn and grow.
Have a safe and Happy Holiday!
