Turning Knowledge into Action: A Lesson from Will Rogers

Breaking Free from the Wage Slave Mentality

When I first decided to go into business with John and stop being a wage slave, I was ecstatic. Previously, I had spent twenty-two years working in restaurants, enduring 120-hour weeks on a low salary with zero benefits. I was working myself to death with 12+ hour shifts six or seven days a week, barely paying bills, and had accepted that fate as my lot in life.

The Power of Continuous Learning

Will Rogers once said, "Even if you are on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there." This quote perfectly encapsulates the key message of my journey. Making the decision to change is easy, but putting what you learn into action is the real challenge.

Strategies for Personal Growth

My approach to personal development involves:

  • Reading books
  • Downloading and listening to audiobooks
  • Consistently applying learned knowledge
  • Embracing failures as learning opportunities

John, my business partner, walks every morning with headphones on, listening to mentors and coaches on repeat. I'm putting in time to learn and, more importantly, putting that knowledge into practice.

Overcoming Fear and Moving Forward

The most critical lesson I've learned is to not let fear keep you from achieving your dreams. You won't get everything right every time, but you'll learn from each failure. The key is to fail forward, using mistakes as stepping stones to success.

The Bottom Line

Success isn't just about knowing the ins and outs of your field. It's about:

  • Making a decisive decision
  • Continuously learning
  • Applying knowledge in real-time
  • Growing from your mistakes
